About the Author
Marilyn L. Geary is an oral historian and author specializing in immigration studies. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UC Berkeley, Marilyn received a B.A. in English Literature/History and an M.A. in Education from San Francisco State University, after which she worked for the Italian Government Travel Office, ENIT-Agenzia Nazionale Turismo, in San Francisco. She conducted her first oral histories with Sicilian fishermen on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Following a career in information technology and instructional design, Marilyn combined her love of language and history to create Circle of Life Stories, helping people write their family histories and working with communities and organizations on oral history and community memory projects. . She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the San Geronimo Valley of West Marin, where she writes, creates fiber art and travels when possible to more remote regions of the world to explore her interests in textiles and tribal cultures.
Giorgo Cheda has dedicated most of his life to the Swiss-Italian diaspora, and thanks to his work, dozens of family stories have not been forgotten. Throughout his books, Cheda has recounted the lives of hundreds of emigrants who reached the other side of the world to manage land that in Ticino they could never dream of owning, distant places linked to a chapter of history too often forgotten by history texts.
Reviews

Marilyn L. Geary has scrupulously analyzed the migrations to explain their history in an original way. Following the vicissitudes of the Rotanzi family from Peccia described in the letters sent from Australia and California, we gain a glimpse of the demographic history woven between the continents. -Giorgio Cheda, pre-eminent expert on Ticino emigration

Nineteenth century Swiss-Italian immigrants made an indelible mark on coastal California, Marin County, and Victoria, Australia, among other places in the world. Marilyn L. Geary's welcome book not only gives us a solid history of Swiss emigration, but she writes through the eyes and words of the people who left their homes of generations, traveled under poor conditions and settled in strange but beautiful lands. A father's heart-aching concern for his sons' well-being anchors this thoroughly researched narrative, made alive by Ms. Geary's confident prose. The book is an important addition to the historical record, but will also appeal to readers who enjoy human stories and a sense of place. -Dewey Livingston, West Marin Historian
