Over the past two decades, Simone Leigh has created artwork that situates questions of Black femme-identified subjectivity at the center of contemporary art discourse. Her sculpture, video, installation and social practice explore ideas of race, beauty and community in visual and material culture. Born in Chicago in 1967, Simone Leigh received a BA in fine art with a minor in philosophy from Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana, in 1990. In 2022, Leigh represented the United States at the 59th Venice Biennale with her critically acclaimed exhibition Sovereignty. She has had solo presentations at the Kitchen, New York (2012); Creative Time, New York (2014); New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2016); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2016); and the High Line, New York (2019); among other venues. Leigh lives and works in Brooklyn.

About the Author

Uri McMillan is Assistant Professor of English, African American Studies, and Gender Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Tavia Nyong'o is Professor of African American Studies, American Studies, and Theater & Performance Studies at Yale University and the author of Afro-Fabulations: The Queer Drama of Black Life (2018).

Dionne Brand is the author of numerous volumes of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Her latest poetry collection, Nomenclature: New and Collected Poems, won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry. Her other collections have won the Griffin Poetry Prize, the Governor General's Literary Award, and the Trillium Book Award. Her works of nonfiction include Bread Out of Stone and A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging. From 2009 to 2012 she served as Toronto's poet laureate, and in 2021 she was awarded a Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction. She lives in Toronto.

Malik Gaines is Assistant Professor of Performance Studies in New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and a member of the performance group My Barbarian.

Jessica Lynne is a writer and critic. She is a founding editor of ARTS.BLACK, an online journal of art criticism from Black perspectives. Her writing has been featured in publications such as Artforum, the Believer, Frieze, the Los Angeles Times, the Nation, and Oxford American, where she is a contributing editor. She is the recipient of a 2020 research and development award from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and a 2020 Arts Writer Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation. She is the inaugural recipient of the Beverly Art Writers Travel Grant awarded in 2022 by the American Australian Association. Lynne is an associate editor at Momus and, alongside Rianna Jade Parker, coauthor of the forthcoming publication, Image and Belief: An Unfinished History of Black Artists.

Eva Respini is the Barbara Lee Chief Curator at the ICA/Boston. Previously she was associate curator at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She has organized numerous exhibitions on contemporary art and photography at MoMA, including the recent, critically acclaimed Cindy Sherman retrospective. Other exhibitions she has organized or cocurated include Walid Raad, Robert Heinecken: Object Matter, Boris Mikhailov: Case History (2011), Staging Action: Performance in Photography since 1960 (2011), Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography (2010), Into the Sunset: Photography's Image of the American West (2009), Artist's Choice: Vik Muniz (2008), and New Photography (2012, 2009, 2007, and 2005). She is the author of Cindy Sherman and Into the Sunset: Photography's Image of the American West, coauthor of Ordinary Pictures (2016), Fashioning Fiction in Photography since 1990, and a contributor to numerous other publications.
