About the Author

Nick Cave (born 1959) is an artist and educator working between the visual and performing arts through a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, installation, video, sound and performance. Cave is well known for his Soundsuits, sculptural forms based on the scale of his body, initially created in direct response to the police beating of Rodney King in 1991. Cave has had major exhibitions at MASS MoCA (2016), Cranbrook Art Museum (2015), Saint Louis Art Museum (2014-15), ICA Boston (2014), Denver Art Museum (2013), Seattle Art Museum (2011) and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (2009), among others. Cave lives and works in Chicago.

Malik Gaines is Assistant Professor of Performance Studies in New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and a member of the performance group My Barbarian.
Antwaun Sargent is a director and curator at Gagosian. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The New York Review of Books, among other publications, and he has contributed essays to museum and gallery catalogues. Sargent has co-organized exhibitions including Social Works at Gagosian in New York (2021) and The Way We Live Now at the Aperture Foundation in New York (2018). His first book, The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion, was released by Aperture in 2019.
Naomi Beckwith is the Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. She has curated or cocurated many exhibitions in the United States and has contributed to numerous periodicals and books.
Madeleine Grynsztejn is the Pritzker Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
