About the Author
New Zealander John Ross has spent most of the past thirty years living in and writing about Asia. His extensive travels - undertaken alone and far off the beaten track - include exploration in Papua New Guinea, dispatches from the Karen insurgency in Burma, and searches in the Gobi Desert and Altai Mountains on the trail of an ancient Mongolian myth. Ross lives in a small town in southern Taiwan with his Taiwanese wife. His books include Formosan Odyssey and You Don't Know China. When not writing, reading, or lusting over maps, he can be found on the family farm slashing jungle undergrowth (and having a sly drink).
Reviews
Over the years living here I've often recommended books to newcomers as a way to quickly get up to speed on the country - pound for pound I doubt any do so as efficiently as You Don't Know China. Ryan McLaughlin, LostLaowai.com Astonishingly good reading. Ross tackles many of his popular fallacies with the dispassionate learning of a true historian, combining genuine understanding with a common touch. Bradley Winterton, The Taipei Times Extremely witty and extremely informative, a joy to experience. Ross takes the media to task for credulous and incompetent reporting on China in chapters on ghost towns and megacities, and mops up the floor with "traditional" Chinese medicine. Ross' skeptical mind is like a blowtorch, illuminating before destroying. Michael Turton, The View from Taiwan
