Remarkable Women of Sanibel & Captiva
Jeri Magg
(Author)
Description
In the history of Sanibel and Captiva, countless women bucked the system to make their marks. In the early 1950s and 60s, Sarita Van Vlick and Zee Butler led the fight to preserve the island from unbridled growth and destruction. Helene Gralnick, in the early 80s, opened a small shop that became the foundation for Chico s Inc. And it was city manager Judy Zimomra who put into practice policies that helped Sanibel flourish after the devastation of Hurricane Charley. Author and local historian Jeri Magg compiles the stories and celebrates the achievements of the remarkable women who forever shaped Sanibel and Captiva Islands."

Jeri Magg has been freelancing for over twenty years, writing for regional and local magazines and newspapers. She and her husband, Karl, moved from New York to Sanibel in 1980 with their two daughters, Carolyn and Kathy. An avid bike rider and beach addict, Jeri has volunteered at the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village for more than ten years and has authored numerous articles about the history of the islands. Now, after thirty years of listening to innumerable tales, many told by the original pioneers or their descendants, she's compiled these stories, along with a site map in this book, so others may enjoy the islands while learning their history.
Reviews
"An author, who has been on the island for 36 years, has released another book sharing the deep history of the women of the island. Sanibel-Captiva Islander
"From a Calusa princess to the current city manager, Sanibel Island's history is laced with women who played important roles. Thirty-six of those women come to life in The Remarkable Women of Sanibel and Captiva by Island author Jeri Magg.
The Remarkable Women contains approximately 60 historic photographs, gleaned from public and private sources, some never before published. Collecting these photographs was quite a job, Magg said, but they really add to the book. You see such strength in the faces of these Island heroines. Santiva Chronicle
