Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author and writer of children's fairy tales, such as The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina and The Ugly Duckling, which have become much-loved classics around the world.
Johan August Strindberg (1849 - 1912) was a Swedish playwright, novelist, poet, essayist and painter. But even before Married Life, August Strindberg's reputation as the scourge of the Swedish Establishment made it impossible for him to live in his own country. Strindberg's career spanned four decades, during which time he wrote over sixty plays and more than thirty works of fiction, autobiography, history, cultural analysis, and politics. A bold experimenter and iconoclast throughout, he explored a wide range of dramatic methods and purposes, from naturalistic tragedy, monodrama, and history plays, to his anticipations of expressionist and surrealist dramatic techniques.
Selma Lagerlöf was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Karl Ove Knausgaard is a Norwegian author, known for six autobiographical novels, titled My Struggle.
Reviews
Looking for a last-minute gift that captures the spirit of Christmas? ... A Very Scandinavian Christmas: The Greatest Nordic Holiday Stories of All Time. This is the latest in New Vessel Press's annual 'Very Christmas' series, following anthologies from France, Russia and Italy. Scandinavia is arguably ground zero for Yuletide, with its crisp weather, elk, gnomes and lingonberries. There are 18 stories, both by famous authors - Denmark's Hans Christian Andersen, Norway's Karl Ove Knausgaard and Sweden's August Strindberg - and writers less well known beyond their borders.
