About the Author
Pete Healey's first trip to Santa Rosa Island was in 1973 at the age of 12. Summer vacations turned into employment when he joined the cowboy crew at the age of 17. Pete would work on and off the Island for the next nine years and continual seasonal employment until the last of the cattle were removed in 1998. In 1998 Pete started a horseshoeing business in the Santa Barbara area along with some other business ventures. Pete married Karen Smith in 1990 and their son Charlie was born in 2002. Pete is the manager of Healey Enterprises, LLC which includes the farrier business, a seasonal cattle operation and a company that sells measuring systems for horses' feet. Pete is the CEO of an emerging non-profit corporation called the Equine Podiatry Education Foundation that is involved in collecting research data for the equine foot. The Healey's live in Santa Ynez, California.
