Durante una excursión a pie que hice el verano último por uno o dos de los condados ribereños de Nueva York, me encontré, al declinar el día, algo desconcertado respecto a la ruta a seguir. Apenas había brillado el sol -hablando con propiedad- durante el día, desagradablemente caluroso. Una niebla humosa, parecida a la del verano indio, envolvía todas las cosas y aumentaba, por supuesto, mi incertidumbre. No es que me inquietase mucho el lance. Si no llegaba al pueblo antes de ponerse el sol o antes de oscurecer, era más que posible que apareciese pronto una pequeña granja holandesa, o algo por el estilo, aunque, en realidad, las cercanías (quizá por ser éstas más pintorescas que fértiles) estuvieran despobladas a grandes trechos.

He was first published in 1827 and then began a career as a magazine writer and editor and a sharp literary critic. In 1845 the publication of his most famous poem, "The Raven," brought him national fame.
