Alfred Tennyson was born in Lincolnshire in 1809. While attending Cambridge he met who was to become his closest friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, who died suddenly in 1833. Between then and 1849 Tennyson wrote In Memoriam, and it was first published anonymously in 1850.
