Conventional banking has been around for centuries. In the last decade, the world has been captivated by the onset of Islamic banking, a non-interest banking system that took the world by storm. Many astonished irrespective of Muslim or non-Muslim so attracted to this alternative financial service, and to see that the principles of Islamic banking are somewhat more attractive than those of conventional financial services. Many are astounded at how in practice it is possible for an interest-free bank to prosper more than a conventional financial service, within today's capitalist economy. People are constantly questioning whether Islamic banking is really real and possible, and does it conform to the true Islamic norms. Therefore, the comparative study between Islam and Capitalism was constituted in aid of enlightening people on the concept of conventional and Islamic banking and its practice methods. It continues to explain how conventional banking was derived with the institution of Islamic banking also explaining whether Islamic banking really exists.

About the Author
Farhana Hassim was born in 1967 in Laudium, Pretoria South Africa. She has a strong personality and very staunch in her religious beliefs. She is very flexible, loves travelling, exploring different horizons, and doing all types of sporting activities. She is also very domesticated and enjoys being a career woman. She completed her Matric at the Technical College of Pretoria in 1986. She obtained a certificate of Banking from Damelin Institute of Banking in 1997. In 1999 she completed a course in Intermediate Financial Accounting at University of South Africa, and between 2007-2008 she completed an Islamic finance course through the Islamic Financial Institution of South Africa. In 2009 she acquired a certificate in Management Studies from the Management College of Southern Africa as an entry qualification to a Master of Business Administration degree. Thereafter, she obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from the Management College of Southern Africa in 2014. In 1989 she joined Nedbank where she obtained a broad spectrum of banking experience in all different areas. The areas of work being: Retail Banking in a clerical position between 1989-1993. In 1994 she joined the Nedbank Business Banking division where she worked as a Credit Analyst. In 1999 she continued her banking career with Personal banking as a Senior Credit Analyst and in the same year moved on to Nedbank Private banking where she worked as a Sales Specialist in processing where she managed sales targets for the Pretoria sales team. In 2004 she joined the Nedbank Corporate Banking Risk team and worked as an Assistant to the Credit Manager during the period 2004-2011. Moving into a different position with the same team, she worked as a Management Information System Analyst until 2014. In the 24 years of her employment at Nedbank, she received 15 recognition awards for excellent performance.
