About the Author

Monique Gray Smith is an award-winning, bestselling author and public speaker. Her books cover a broad spectrum of ages, topics and emotions. Woven into all of Monique's writing and her speaking engagements is the teaching that Love is Medicine. Her books include Speaking our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation, My Heart Fills With Happiness, You Hold Me Up, Lucy and Lola, Tilly: A Story of Hope and Resilience, Tilly and the Crazy Eights, When We Are Kind and I Hope. She has also created the young adult adaptation of Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Monique is Cree and Scottish. She lives with her family on the Traditional Territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən and WSÁNEĆ Peoples.

Julie Flett is a Swampy Cree and Red River Métis author, illustrator and artist. She has received numerous awards for her picture books, including the Governor General's Award for When We Were Alone and On The Trapline (written by David A. Robertson), the American Indian Library Association Award for Little You (written by Richard Van Camp) and a BolognaRagazzi Award special mention for We Sang You Home (also written by Richard Van Camp). She is the three-time recipient of the Christie Harris Illustrated Children's Literature Award. Her picture book Birdsong was awarded the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award for 2020 and Wild Berries was chosen as Canada's First Nation Communities Read title selection for 2014-2015.

Margaret Noodin received a PhD in Literature and Linguistics, an MFA in Creative Writing and bachelor's degrees in English and Education at the University of Minnesota. She is currently Professor of English and American Indian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she also serves as the Associate Dean of the Humanities and the Director of the Electa Quinney Institute for American Indian Education.She is the author of Bawaajimo: A Dialect of Dreams in Anishinaabe Language and Literature, and two bi-lingual books of poetry in Anishinaabemowin and English: Weweni and What the Chickadee Knows. Her poems have been anthologized in New Poets of Native Nations, Sing: Poetry from the Indigenous Americas, Poetry Magazine, The Michigan Quarterly Review and Yellow Medicine Review. Margaret was born in Colorado and grew up in Chaska, Minnesota and has been blessed with many mentors and teachers as she has worked in language and education. She identifies as American, Anishinaabe, Irish and Metis.
