Compelling childhood facts broaden the reader's knowledge about each species. Did you know that newborn bats consume their own weight in milk every day? The overarching theme of breastfeeding inspires conversations about parenting, biology, habitats, survival, and more, making this book an engaging choice for young children as well as elementary school readers. An extensive Teacher's Guide, available for free download in English and Spanish, enhances the book's content, increasing learning opportunities.

Reviews
In this cross-species tribute to mothering and motherhood, youngest readers and listeners will find short, rhyming poems in English and Spanish that partner with luminous artwork. Fox's soft, evocative watercolor-and-pencil portraits, each of a particular mammal mom and her young in their natural environments...are gentle and quiet, effectively complementing the text and communicating to young readers the tenderness of the nursing experience. In outstanding examples of "show, don't tell," each quatrain in English followed by its Spanish counterpart is as soothing and warm as the art accompanying it. Rather than an attempt to mimic the English, [the] beautiful Spanish interpretations of the artwork maintain their own rhythm and syntax, independently showing the story of each painting. [This] technique recognizes and honors young hablantes and their parents and teachers.
This bilingual (English/Spanish) book showcases different baby mammals all sharing one common trait: They are all nursing from their mothers. In rhyming English text accompanied by its Spanish counterpart, readers are introduced to 13 different nursing mammals. The illustrations are done in watercolor, the inherent gentleness and warmth of the media making it an ideal complement to the text... Older children will enjoy the extra information that can be found about each animal at the end ... A sweet book.
