Kalua Lauber was born in New Orleans and grew up in a small town called Buras, La. Her hometown was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. The destruction of her town and the aftermath inspired this novel. She performed stand-up comedy for many years in Los Angeles but has decided to pursue a career as a writer and teacher. She is married to Celso Lauber and has one son also named Celso Aaron Lauber.
