About the Author
John Lewis is a multiple award-winning former journalist who lived and worked in Asia for over thirty years, including several trips to North Korea. Lewis was CNN's first correspondent in the region and was instrumental in the network's Asia expansion. During that time he covered stories that spotlighted the heights of human endeavors, the depths of man's cruelty and everything Mother Nature could conjure up. He was one of only two reporters to accompany Koreans who had been politically stranded in Japan since World War II on a trip to their homeland and long-lost families. He also reported on the long road to the downfall of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, the Tiananmen Square massacre, the death of Japan's Emperor Hirohito, the assassinations of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, Hong Kong's return to China, presidential elections in Taiwan, deadly air disasters, volcanic eruptions, typhoons, earthquakes, the rise of fundamentalism, civil strife, U.S. presidential trips to the region, the visit of a Pope, Olympic Games and a scissors-wielding dancing beautician. Lewis is a graduate of Tokyo's Sophia University (Jochi Daigaku) and holds a Ph.D. He previously worked for two years at the East-West Center, a think tank in Honolulu, and currently is an account supervisor at Hawaii's premier public relations and consultancy firm, Communications Pacific. He lives with his wife Reiko, an interior designer, and their two cats Noi and Sora in East Honolulu.
