Reviews
"Telling the Civil War's story through these personal letters from those who fought it provides unforgettable descriptions of brutal battles, extreme living conditions, the hopes of slaves, the living hell of prisons, and unsanitary and frequently fatal medical treatment that could not otherwise be expressed as poignantly. ... (Karl Helicher, Foreword Reviews)

"Members of the Civil War/War Between the States community are always looking for new insights into the struggle and the Wisconsin Historical Society Press has brought us a gem." (James M. Gallen, Civil War Roundtable of Gettysburg, "The Angle" magazine)

... "Taken together, these letters paint an intimate picture of the 80,000 men from Wisconsin who went to war and of the 11,000 who never returned home. They speak eloquently to us of a time when uncommon valor became a common virtue." (Gordon Berg, The Civil War Round Table of The District Columbia book review)

"The letters included help illustrate how the war affected the North, what life was like in Civil War camps, reports from battles and thoughts on slavery and emancipations. They bring the bloodiest era of American history right to Wisconsin's doorstep." (Bobby Tanzilo, Managing Editor, On Milwaukee.com)

With "This Wicked Rebellion," we're able to see the divided world of the 1860s through the eyes of Wisconsin's own. (Jeanne Kolker, Wisconsin State Journal)
