About the Author
With a love for teaching and a 40-year passion for enameling, Karen L. Cohen shares her knowledge of this time-tested art form. Her first love is Cloisonné enameling on fine silver for the luminosity, depth, and variety of color, but she also enjoys working in an array of techniques on copper. She is proud to present this completely revised and updated edition of her book, to which over 165 artists have contributed. She resides in Milford, Pennsylvania. Karen has a set of web pages that provide book extensions including experimental results and info provided by others that did not make it into the book. Reviews
What a superb book you have built. Crazy amount of work! And as I posted, the most important book on enameling for at least 50 years. This is the Oppi Untracht of enameling books. A beautiful, thorough, exquisite job of it. Thank you for all you have contributed to the culture by doing this.--Charles Lewton-Brain
I'm so proud to be part of this incredible project. Karen Cohen has put together THE definitive book on enameling currently in print . . . It has everything. Basics to advanced. If you think you know everything about enameling, I promise you'll find something new in it to inspire you. I mean, just looking at the hundreds of color pictures is sending my creative carburetor into high gear. It's simply a tour de force.--JbEbert--Jb Ebert
Completely revised, updated and expanded with major contributions of knowledge from our colleagues - including ME! There isn't a subject left behind - studio notes shared, years of experience poured into each technique by each artist - Clear and concise tutorials and advice - Its going to take you weeks to get through it - because your going to go gaga over the photos and if you are like me, smelling a new book right off the press! --Trish White--Trish White
Enameling (the fusing glass to metal under high-temperature conditions) is amazingly diverse. Practically anything made from enamel-friendly metal can be enameled, from vases to jewelry to buttons to metal mesh and solid forms. Now in a significantly revised, expanded, and fully updated second edition "The Art of Fine Enameling" by Karen L. Cohen (an artist and teacher working primarily in Cloisonne enameling, as well as beadwork and embroidery who draws upon her 15 years of experience and expertise) showcases twenty-one DIY enameling projects. Each project has a gallery of the work of other artists working in the same technique, to give a view of other ways a technique can look and be used. Classic techniques such as champleve, cloisonne, and plique--a-jour each have projects, as do newer approaches such as the use of graphite pencil and enameling on steel. Of special note is the extensive chapter on troubleshooting. Critique: Profusely illustrated, and step-by-step informative, "The Art of Fine Enameling" is ideal as a curriculum textbook on enameling and is unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, community, and academic library collections. It should be noted for the personal reading lists of art students, academia, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject that "The Art of Fine Enameling" is also available in digital book format (Kindle, $24.68).--Midwest Book Review
