Tom Funke was born in Muskegon, raised in West Michigan exploring fields, forests, streams, and wetlands. After graduating from Bangor High School, he earned his degree from Western Michigan Univerity in Biology & Environmental Studies. He embarked on a 30 year career as a conservation educator at Binder Park Zoo & Michigan Audubon. Meanwhile, he hiked over 2000 miles of the North Country Trail, including all of Michigan, Wisconsin & Pennsylvania. He has hiked about half of Minnesota (Border Route, Kekekabic, Superior Hiking Trail) and a small portion of New York. He owns Trailspotters, an outfitting business in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
