"Walk ten thousand miles; read ten thousand books"--so the Chinese saying has it. As a writer, translator, and person with a PhD in East Asian history, I read a lot. For years now, I've published an annual reading journal on my blog Ten Thousand Li. With Bookhop, I've found a way to make it easier for everyone to find the books I'm writing about while also supporting local, independent bookstores. My tastes are eclectic, but believing with Goethe that "the epoch of World Literature is at hand," I am devoting this site to hastening its approach. Therefore, the emphasis here is on the best in translations into English, writing about travel and the world, and literature that I think has or should have a place in the hearts and minds of people everywhere--plus a few sidelines that are dear to me, like my academic interests and the craft of writing. These lists will continue growing as I discover new books I want to share. Life is a journey, and so is literature.
