St. Mark's Bookstore, San Antonio, Tx.
We are a small store that offers fiction and on-fiction books, Episcopal resources such as prayer books, hymnals, Bibles, and gift items. Reading material is carefully chosen to support literary interests, spiritual needs, and the religious learning efforts of our community.
Our Story
In The Beginning
In 2009, the present St. Mark's Bookstore opened at the request of the then rector, The Rev. Mike Chalk. It was fully operational and adequately stocked. Opened by a wonderful committee who had years of experience with Viva! Bookstore and the bookstore at Christ Church or had decorating and sales experience.
It was and is formed as a ministry.
Our Ministry
Christian Formation is not limited to the guidance of teachers who are on church staffs or even Christian. One of the most important aspects of our formation as disciples of Christ occurs through the ministry of books. Through books, we can spend days and days being guided by the most important spiritual guides of our time--or of any time: Mary Earle and Philip Newell on Celtic Christianity, biblical commentators with solid scholarship, classic works by Walter Brueggemann on social justice, Abraham Heschel on wisdom, Brene Brown on relationships, C.S. Lewis on theology, Anne Lamott on creativity, Jane Godall and Wendell Berry on the environment, the novels of Marilynn Robinson on faith, and on classic children's books on love. What we read in the best spiritual literature is not just a way of passing the time, but also a way of shaping our actions and identity as people of faith.
Where We Are Now
Because of recent events--the temporary closing of St. Mark's Parish House building, the closing of Viva! Bookstore and the restrictions of Covid 19--the St. Mark's Bookstore has moved their inventory and operations online to continue to serve not only St. Mark's but to reach our wider community. We will be moving back into the Parish House, in a new and larger space (we are so excited) sometime after the beginning of 2022. We will continue to operate fully online.

The Bookstore Committee, gives thanks and prays for those writers who have done so much to teach us how to live as vibrant followers of Jesus:
Almighty God, you proclaim your truth in every age by many voices;
Direct in our time, we pray, those who speak where many listen,
And those who write what many read;
that they may do their part in making the heart of this people wise,
its mind sound, and its will righteous,
to the honor of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
