Kate Garchinsky is a children’s book illustrator and an Eckelberry Artist Fellow at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia of Drexel University. Kate received her BFA in Illustration at the University of the Arts, where she received the Thornton Oakley Medal for Excellence in Illustration. Her children’s book debut, The Secret Life of the Red Fox, written by Laurence Pringle, is a 2017 NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book, a Eureka! Silver Award Winner by the California Reading Association, and was nominated for the Ezra Jack Keats Award. Kate’s growing list of award-winning narrative nonfiction also includes a chapter book, Belle’s Journey: An Osprey Takes Flight, and four additional picture books in the Secret Life series, with more to come.
Kate does her best work late at night, eating dark chocolate and listening to music by The Cure. When she’s not busy at her easel, Kate and her husband, Brian, take long bird walks with their rambunctious rescue puppy, Ruby Roo. Their two cats, Julia and Spenser, stay indoors and watch birds safely through the window panes of their little woodland home in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
