BLACKLIT: Curated For The Culture
After just two incredible years of serving the community, BLACKLIT has closed its physical doors. As the first and only bookstore in Farmers Branch, this journey has been filled with both triumphs and challenges, including harassment that ultimately led to this difficult decision. Despite this setback, our commitment to literacy, representation, and cultural empowerment remains unwavering.
Founded by educator and diversity advocate Nia-Tayler Clark, BLACKLIT began in 2019 as the first monthly subscription box exclusively highlighting Black authors and entrepreneurs. Over the years, we expanded into a beloved brick-and-mortar bookstore, providing a vital space for conversations, education, and connection that foster unity across racial divides.
This closure highlights the barriers many Black-owned businesses face, particularly in creating safe, inclusive spaces. Yet, the story of BLACKLIT is far from over. We are actively working to rebuild, whether through a new permanent location, pop-ups, or reimagining our subscription boxes.
In the meantime, you can continue to support us by purchasing books through our Bookshop.org page, where a percentage of each sale supports BLACKLIT’s mission. Additionally, we have established the BLACKLIT Foundation to amplify diverse voices, close the literacy gap, and create spaces that celebrate Black stories and empower communities.
Together, we can write the next chapter of BLACKLIT and ensure this vital work continues. Thank you for being a part of our journey. Your support keeps our vision alive.
