The Flying Pig Bookstore
Flying Pig customers! You can use this wonderful Bookshop.org site both when we are closed for our January 1-7 vacation (which means we won't process flyingpigbooks.com orders for a week) and any time you want to ship books out of state. It's often faster to order here for titles that need to be shipping, since Bookshop can draw from the closest warehouses in the country to wherever you want to send book.
The Flying Pig Bookstore opened in 1996 in the original Charlotte, Vermont post office. After 10 years, our "towers of knowledge" (i.e., stacks of books on the floor) made it clear that we'd outgrown our building, so we moved to the historic Old Shelburne Inn building up the road in Shelburne.
For 25 years, we've had an incredible roster of booksellers, amazing visiting authors and artists, and countless fabulous events. We've been honored with an award for Best Children's Bookstore in the country, two "best of" awards from Yankee Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal chose us as one of seven bookstores around the country that help serve as anchors for their towns. We feel so lucky to be part of our vibrant reading community and to play a small part in the lives of our many customers.
WHY THE NAME?
Originally (but no longer) a children's bookstore, founder Elizabeth Bluemle wanted a name with child appeal and whimsy. The name "Flying Pig" popped into her head, and it fit: the symbol of impossible dreams come true, the flying pig is the perfect representative for a little independent bookstore flapping into the challenging headwinds of commerce (and now COVID) and somehow staying aloft.
