Description

"I suppose that in order to feel a ray of hope, see the light, you have to have first lived in darkness. "

Life is supposed to go a certain way. You grow up, you fall in love, you partner up, and you grow old together. But what happens when your happily ever after is interrupted, forever changed by shattering news?

Author Heidi McCann was just a young teenager that summer in 1990 when she first laid eyes on the boy who would become her first love, and eventually the man who would change her life.

Curtis Roger Vance was handsome, popular, and just a little wild. It was the story that small town romances in rural Vermont are made of. At least at first.

Curtis and Heidi did fall in love and begin their life together, albeit through several breakups and a long twisty road to young adulthood. However, far too early on in their life together, they were dealt the devastating blow that Curtis had ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Curtis' remaining time on earth would be fraught with questions, catastrophic illness, and the most beautiful and heartwarming coming of age, surrounded by the fierce love of the woman by his side, and a community who rallied around them both.

With a remarkable mix of tenderness and frankness, McCann guides us through their love story, their anguish, their heartbreak, and the ultimate redemption that comes with perfect healing in death, while exploring the lives and loves of those left behind.

This is a book about learning to live while preparing to die. It is beautiful, it will crack you wide open, and it will heal your heart in ways you do not expect.

All that I am I give to you,

and all that I have I share with you.

Whatever the future holds,

I will love you and stand by you.

We will be united for all eternity.

This is my solemn vow.

About the Author

Born and raised in Hartford, CT, Heidi spent her summers in Vermont. She graduated from The Loomis Chaffee School where she learned about the power and importance of the written word. She earned her undergraduate degree from Middlebury College and her graduate degree from Dartmouth College. She honed her skills as a creative writer at both institutions. When she was 23, her boyfriend at the time was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease, and was given 6-12 months to live. She left her job, cared for him full time and they were married 22 days before his death. Journaling helped her while they lived with the disease as well as after his death and she eventually used those entries to write her first book.Heidi remarried and now lives in Simsbury, CT, with her husband, their four children and two dogs. She relishes the time they spend as a family. Heidi sets aside at least one hour a day to physically move her body during which time ideas, words, and sentences of future books enter her mind.

Reviews

"This is a true story of many things - of deep and abiding love, the tragedy of ALS, particularly the familial type, of conscious dying and of spiritual healing, not only for Curtis and Heidi, but for the community who loves and holds them. Heidi's writing is compelling, passionate and articulate. You will want a few hours and a box of tissues as it is hard to put down once you start reading. As a grief counselor, this book will be on my shelf to share with clients who willl surely resonate on many levels. May a cure be found for ALS."

"I couldn't put this down. A beautiful but painful love story crafted with a mastery of words reminding us that life truly can change in an instant. It's a journey of renewed purpose after heartbreaking loss and for this extended family a labor of love to find a cure for this terrible disease."

"I could not put this book down. It is a story of love, resilience and courage. The author's honesty in sharing her journey with a terminally ill loved one allows the reader an insight to a life that is at once blessed and incredibly challenging."
