Description
A new stand-alone thriller from the New York Times bestselling author Julie Hyzy, Virtual Sabotage introduces Kenna Ward, an envoy for a virtual reality company whose implants create a thrilling world that allows people to create daring scenarios in a safe environment. Most of the time, that is. When in the rare instance the human brain mistakes the terrifying event as real, it's up to Ward to enter the scenario and pull them back to reality. But when a key envoy goes rogue and people begin responding in odd and dangerous ways, Ward delves deeper, finding a sinister conspiracy to take over not only the virtual reality world, but the real one as well. Ward must stop it before there are no longer any independent minds left to control.

Reviews
"Hyzy, best known for her popular White House Chef series, shifts gears with this engaging take on the techno-thriller. Virtu-Tech is a virtual reality company that offers its clients the opportunity to be immersed in lifelike virtual reality environments. Sometimes the client gets confused and thinks the virtual environment is real; when that happens, Kenna Ward helps the client escape safely. When Kenna's partner, Charlie, enters an environment without clearance, after apparently disabling the safety protocols, Kenna makes a desperate, though unsuccessful, attempt to extricate him. Determined to find out what happened (Charlie was her lover not just her professional partner), Kenna risks her own life to expose a terrifying conspiracy and bring Charlie's killers to justice. The book has a great premise- the virtual reality angle suggests Adam Sternbergh's Shovel Ready (2014)-and the story unspools cleverly and with plenty of suspense. In addition, Kenna is a notably empathetic lead character. Hard-core techno-thriller fans may find themselves wanting more techie detail behind the thrills (in the Michael Crichton mode), but this is a strong and satisfying tale." -Booklist
