Thomas Jefferson (1743-1824) was the drafter of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States. Merrill D. Peterson (1921-2009) was professor of history at the University of Virginia and the author of Thomas Jefferson and the New Nation: A Biography, The Jefferson Image in the American Mind, and Lincoln in American Memory.
