Description

The Age of Beginnings has ended. The Age of heroes is now beginning.

What if Beowulf is the written account of a story that stretches back to the dawn of time? Helen Bowie asks this question. Hrunting, daughter of Unferth, the mage of Heorot, lives it. Both women fight for the rights of social outsiders against powerful men, heroes with the power to change society, perhaps for the better, perhaps not. The Last Song of the Swan tells the intertwined stories of two women who lived 25,000 years apart. Both stories ask the reader to consider who determines who is human and who is "the other" who must be destroyed.

About the Author

A lifelong New Mexican, Jennifer Bohnhoff loves travel and history, so it should come as no surprise that many of her books are historical novels set in beautiful or interesting places. She taught Middle School Language Arts and New Mexico History for years, but has left to become a full time author. She loves helping people reach that "ah hah" moment when they suddenly understand the connections between themselves, the past, eternity, and the world around them.Mrs. Bohnhoff is the mother of three handsome men, the mother-in-law of three beautiful daughters and the grandmother of three very smart granddaughters and one grandson. She lives in the mountains of central New Mexico with her husband, Monstro the wonder dog, and a petulant stinker of a cat who cares nothing for her writing.

Interesting twist on a classic

Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2022I wasn't sure what to expect when I started, but the imagery of a long-ago time contrasting with our era sucked me in and held me spell-bound through the story. I remember the story of Beowulf as assigned in high school English class, and this memory carried me into the high school of the book. Powerful concepts, powerful imagery, powerful book..

At the beginning, I wasn't quite clear on the connection between the two time periods even though this was described as "A dual timeline novel about the origins of prejudice and cultural exclusion". THEN... OMG!!!! Once I saw how the two stories paralleled each other, I went into a completely different reading mode. Reading this book was an experience; not just two stories in two separate time periods, but rather a lesson in human nature. I only hope that we learn from it...
