About the Author

Jack Vance (1916-2013) was an influential American author of science fiction, fantasy and mystery literature. His 1950 story The Dying Earth is widely recognized as a fantasy classic, and served as inspiration for Dungeons & Dragons. He wrote more than 50 novels and dozens of novellas and short stories, including masterpieces such as the Lyonesse trilogy, the adventures of Cugel the Clever, The Demon Princes and Planet of Adventure series, and The Cadwal Chronicles. Jack Vance received three Hugos, the Nebula, Jupiter, Edgar, and World Fantasy awards, and attained the rank of SFWA Grand Master for lifetime achievement in fantasy and science fiction.

Dana Gioia is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning poet. Former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Gioia is a native Californian of Italian and Mexican descent. He received a B.A. and a M.B.A. from Stanford University and an M.A. in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. He won the 2018 Poets' Prize for his collection 99 Poems: New and Selected. Gioia currently serves as the Poet Laureate of California, teaches at the University of Southern California, and has written five volumes of poetry, as well as the influential essay collection Can Poetry Matter?
