About the Author

John Sanford was a screenwriter and author who wrote twenty-four books. He was a one-time member of the Communist Party, and after he and his wife Marguerite Roberts refused to testify to the House Un-American Activities Committee, they were blacklisted and unable to work in Hollywood for nearly a decade. He died in 2003 at age ninety-eight.
Jack Mearns is a professor of psychology at California State University, Fullerton. His essays on American writers have appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books. He is the author of the non-fiction John Sanford: An Annotated Bibliography (revised second edition, 2022, Cutting Edge).
