Reviews

Praise for Melissa Albert

"I love Melissa Albert's writing--she makes me believe in magic." --Stephanie Garber, author of CARAVAL

"Her words are electric, sizzling; they crash through the bloodstream with the same force as the magic she conjures in her stories." --Krystal Sutherland, author of HOUSE OF HOLLOW

"No one weaves fairytale magic into the modern world like Melissa Albert." --David Arnold, author of I LOVED YOU IN ANOTHER LIFE

Praise for OUR CROOKED HEARTS

"This book is like a puzzle box that somehow contains a more interesting version of THE CRAFT. . . . It all boils down to the roiling cauldron of mother/daughter issues at the core of this story, and the twisting mystery of it all is very satisfying to unravel. It's clever and sharp and there's a reveal that really tore my heart out. All that plus teen witches―what more could you ask for?" ―NPR.org

"Albert has a rare talent for language. Every line reads like an incantation, and the result is a book that holds the reader firmly under its spell." --V. E. Schwab, author of THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE

"A standalone novel so precise and enthralling that the only possible explanation is that Albert herself is a witch . . . a novel that will be devoured as well as savored. It takes risks and, magically, succeeds. And whether or not Albert is in fact a witch, one thing is for sure: her words are magic." ―BOOKLIST, starred review

Praise for THE HAZEL WOOD

"Albert seamlessly combines contemporary realism with fantasy, blurring the edges in a way that highlights that place where stories and real life convene, where magic contains truth, and the world as it appears is false, where just about anything can happen, particularly in the pages of a good book. It's a captivating debut." --THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

Praise for THE NIGHT COUNTRY

"A must-read for fans of portal fantasies, mysteries, and readers who prefer their magic with bloody sharp edges." --SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL, starred review

Praise for TALES FROM THE HINTERLAND

"Rich with bloodshed, metamorphosis and inevitable comeuppance, written with the absolute assurance of a master storyteller summoning an audience to the fireside on a winter's night, Albert's book is uniquely transporting and discomfiting, a length of shining fabric flecked with glass that sparkles as it cuts." ―THE TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT
