About the Author

Karl Toepfer is Associate Dean in the College of Humanities and the Arts, San Jose State University. He is the author of Empire of Ecstasy: Nudity and Movement in German Body Culture, 1910--1935 (University of California Press, 1997); Theatre, Aristocracy, and Pornocracy (PAJ Publications, 1991); and The Voice of Rapture (Peter Lang Publisher, 1991), as well as a novel, Ursumari (Orella, 2001), and numerous scholarly articles on theatre, dance, dramatic literature, and film. A current project is a book about ancient Roman dance drama.

George Baker's book... is the first in English dealing specifically with Picabia's Dada work in Paris and is a serious rethinking of the readymade (the other, Picabian, one) based on a study of the artist's singularly multifarious practice.
