About the Author

DAVID W . GATES JR . is a post office enthusiast who has traveled thousands of miles nationwide in search of historic post office buildings and art. He blogs about his work at www.postofficefans.com. Although the murals have been around for more than 86 years, David discovered how often these are overlooked. Join David in his quest to visit them all. He lives in Crystal Lake, Illinois with his wife and son. When not photographing and documenting post offices, he can be found cooking, baking, hiking, or involved in do-it-yourself projects at home, not necessarily all at once and not necessarily in that order. Reviews

"Having restored over 200 post office murals across the country, I had always wished for more detailed books. Finally, we find an author who delivers. David W. Gates Jr. does a fantastic job with the history of each mural, providing context and backstory not found in other books. For fans of post office murals everywhere, Mr. Gates may be the perfect chronicler."

"I am delighted that this book will encourage more people to discover the wonderful Post Office murals in Tennessee which still capture hearts and minds. As the late Tennessee State Historian Wilma Dykeman wrote in 1990 in the Knoxville News-Sentinel, Minna Citron's murals 'make people friends across time and geography.' Minna's murals continue to fascinate us with their depictions of life during the Great Depression."

-Christiane Citron, Granddaughter of the artist Minna Citron

"Documenting Post Office works of art from the 1930s is a real public service, an important contribution to their conservation. Gates (aka Post Office Fans) helps us appreciate them with photos and interesting creation stores."

-Toby McIntosh, Author of Apple Picking, Tobacco Harvesting and General Lee: Arlington's New Deal Murals and Muralist
