Description

This first novel of an epic fantasy trilogy reintroduces readers to the beloved and bestselling world of Deverry, blending magic, politics, and adventure in an unforgettable setting.

The bards are the people's voice--and their sword.

All over the kingdom of Deverry, the common people are demanding reform of the corrupt law courts. In Aberwyn, the situation catches fire when Gwerbret Ladoic, second in authority only to the High King, allows a bard to starve to death rather than hear their grievances.

Guildwoman Alyssa, a student at the local scholars' collegium, and Lady Dovina, the gwerbret's own daughter, know that evidence exists to overthrow the so-called traditional legal system, if they can only get it into the right hands. The powerful lords will kill anyone who threatens their privileges.

To retrieve the proof, Alyssa must make a dangerous journey that will either change her life forever--or end it.

Reviews

Praise for the novels of Deverry

"A welcome return to a long-beloved world that also takes the story in a fresh direction."
Kirkus Reviews

"If you love unusual fantasy, well written plots, realistic characters, and a fresh take on magic, I think readers will love this novel. It compares with any of the great fantasy novels of the last ten years, with female characters that are independent and brave, and intriguing political maneuverings."
—Duncan's Books and More

"Kerr's Deverry novels are my favorite of the post-Tolkien modern fantasy novels. The landscape is utterly real, and the story is gritty, emotional, complex, and original in execution and setting. This is one tale that truly needs to be told in multiple volumes."
—Kate Elliott, author of the Crown of Stars series

"One of the best sword-and-sorcery novels I have read in some time."
—Andre Norton

"No one does real, live, gritty Celtic fantasy better than Katherine Kerr."
—Judith Tarr

"Kerr fluently and gracefully limns her Celtic-based medieval world."
Publishers Weekly

"An epic high fantasy plot that is absolutely spellbinding.
—Midwest Book Review

"Much as I dislike comparing anything to The Lord of the Rings, I have to admit that on this occasion, it's justified."
Interzone Magazine

"The Deverry novels are rich with details—realistic characters, political viewpoints, magic, adventure, romance, the Seelie, elves, dwarves, and dragons—and truly deserves the description 'epic.'"
—Fantasy Literature

"This is another of Kerr's wonderfully layered and complicated weavings of characters and their reincarnations.... The Silver Mage is an excellent end to the quartet."
—Night Owl Romance

"For the readers who have been following not only the Silver Wyrm quartet, but the Deverry saga, I will say this: read every single page until there is nothing but blank pages left.... After reading The Silver Mage, you will find yourself smiling."
—Fresh Fiction
