About the Author
Thomas Helling, MD, is professor of surgery at University of Mississippi Medical Center and School of Medicine and headed the Division of General Surgery from 2009 to 2023. He is author of The Great War and the Birth of Modern Medicine; The Agony of Heroes: Medical Care for America's Besieged Legions from Bataan to Khe Sanh; and Desperate Surgery in the Pacific War: Doctors and Damage Control for American Wounded, 1941-1945.
