Description

Teachers are trained to manage misbehavior in the classroom, but receive little guidance about how to cultivate positive, prosocial behavior.

With this book in hand, elementary teachers will be ready to launch the school year with confidence, using the concrete strategies in each chapter for improving students' SEL skills in the five categories defined by CASEL (the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning): communication skills, emotion management, emotional awareness, social awareness, and decision-making skills. This handy guide breaks down instruction of these skills into small, sequenced steps, making it easy to foster students' skills from the start of school and build on them as the year progresses.

Reviews

SEL From the Start is a gem of a resource for teachers new to Social and Emotional Learning, as well as for those educators looking to deepen their current practices...The book's upbeat, conversational tone makes it an easy read for busy faculty members, and it provides a roadmap for how to start out the school year...She uses refreshingly direct language about racial and social inequality, connecting DEI work to the skills SEL brings to the table.--Mary-Patricia Moynihan, Ed.M. Candidate, Klingenstein Center, New York, NY
SEL From the Start is a practical, straightforward guide for educators to use in their classrooms. A must-read for any educator serious about supporting the whole child.--Jacqueline Jodl, Associate Professor, University of Virginia, School of Education and Human Development
This book is wholly readable, completely practical, and superbly organized; reading it is like having a conversation with a trusted colleague.--Carol Ann Tomlinson, Ed.D., author of How to Differentiate Instruction in Academically Diverse Classrooms (3rd edition)
Every educator should read this wonderful, groundbreaking book for practical, research-based guidance to promote the social, emotional, and academic learning of all students.--Roger P. Weissberg, PhD, Chief Knowledge Officer and Board Vice Chair, Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning
Too often, social-emotional learning is viewed as something separate from academics. Or SEL is something done to children. In a welcome contrast, Sara Rimm-Kaufman provides practical guidance for teaching SEL as a part of everyday schoolwork.--Mike Anderson, education consultant and author of What We Say and How We Say It Matter
