Could A Deceased Rabbi Be The Messiah?

He was called the Lubavitcher Rebbe, and he was arguably the most influential Jewish leader of the twentieth century. Presidents and prime ministers sought personal audiences with him. He established outreach centers in virtually every Jewish community worldwide. And by the time of his death in 1994, his followers believed he was the Messiah. Many still believe this today, more than twenty-five years after his death.

But is that possible?

Michael L. Brown, PhD, takes you on a journey beginning in Brooklyn, New York, then back through Jewish history, looking at little-known Jewish beliefs about potential Messiahs in each generation and even the reincarnated soul of the Messiah. Discover how yes, a deceased rabbi could be the Messiah...but with one caveat.

Reviews

"In this provocative book, Dr. Brown brings an eye-opening new dimension to the apologetics of the resurrection. He contrasts the disciples' testimonies of Jesus (Yeshua) being raised from the dead with the bizarre beliefs of some past and current Jewish followers of false messiahs. Readers who appreciate Jewish history and theology will be stunned by the implications of what is presented here, since it places Jewish evangelism squarely in the epicenter of the ultimate destiny of mankind. This book will be of special value in developing strategies for evangelizing the Orthodox Jewish sect known as Chabad-Lubavitch, a group that has strong influence today on Jewish communities throughout the world. Liberal skeptics of the resurrection--if they have the intellectual honesty to deal with the arguments presented--will gnash their teeth over this book."

--Jim Melnick, International Coordinator, Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism

"Michael Brown's new book provides an absolutely captivating discussion comparing the recent Messianic claims regarding Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson with those of Jesus Christ. Particularly helpful is Brown's approach in identifying and addressing common concerns regarding Jewish conceptions of a Messiah who not only dies, but rises, providing many fascinating insights along with sometimes bizarre stories. Highly recommended."

--Gary R. Habermas, Distinguished Research Professor of Apologetics and Philosophy, Chair, Department of Philosophy and Theology, Liberty University

"Dr. Michael Brown is the world's premier scholar addressing Jewish objections to Jesus. In this volume, Brown assesses several Messianic figures from the past to the present, with special attention given to Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who died in 1994 and whose disciples claim he is alive and lives among them to this day. With keen scholarly labor and clearly articulated argumentation, Brown answers those claims and effectively demonstrates that Jesus is the Messiah predicted in the Scriptures."

--Michael R. Licona, PhD, Associate Professor in Theology, Houston Baptist University

"This is vintage Michael Brown! Using Jewish sources, the Bible, and evidence from life, Brown shows how Chabad's teachings about their late Rebbe, Menachem Schneerson, compare and contrast with the gospel. While Brown focuses on the resurrection, he also brings Jesus' life and death into the discussion to build a case for His Messiahship. Chabad is one of the most influential Jewish movements worldwide, even sending missionaries to some of the same places Jewish for Jesus goes as we minister to Israeli backpackers in India or Nepal. I can't think of a better time for a book like this!"

--David Brickner, Executive Director, Jews for Jesus
