About the Author

HARRY COOPER is curator and head of modern art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC.
Mark Godfrey is curator of international art at Tate Modern, London. He has cocurated the exhibitions Richard Hamilton (2014), Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan (2012), Gerhard Richter: Panorama (2011), Francis Alÿs: A Story of Deception (2010), and Roni Horn AKA Roni Horn (2010). He is the author of Abstraction and the Holocaust (2007) and Alighiero E Boetti (2011), and of recent essays on R.H. Quaytman, Christopher Wool, Christopher Williams, and Julie Mehretu.
William Kentridge is an artist best known for his animated films based on charcoal drawings. He also works in prints, books, collage, sculpture, and the performing arts. His work has been widely exhibited, including at the Museum of Modern Art, the Musée du Louvre, Whitechapel Gallery, the Reina Sofia museum, and the Kunstmuseum Basel.
Glenn Ligon is an artist living and working in New York. Throughout his career, Ligon has pursued an incisive exploration of American history, literature, and society across bodies of work that build critically on the legacies of modern painting and conceptual art. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University and attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.
