John Brooke commenced his medical studies at Edinburgh in the early 1960s at a time when his professors had a wide personal experience of the epidemics of the Second World War and the after-war years in both Europe and the tropics.
His desire to practice medicine in its broadest sense led to an interesting and varied career spanning nearly fifty years, during which time he practiced in the United Kingdom, France and latterly in Chad.
