About the Author
Leila Gómez is associate professor of Spanish and director of the Latin American Studies Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She studies travel narratives in Latin America and their relation to informal empires and knowledge production in Europe and the Americas.
Reviews
This beautifully conceived book consolidates Leila Gómez's standing as one of the foremost specialists in the literature on travel in Spanish America. Impossible Domesticity focuses on the ways 'the travel experience' destabilized deeply held notions of race, class, gender, and culture and shaped narratives that countered orientalist and stereotypical representations of Mexico. By doing so, she restores the agency of local scenarios, peoples, and knowledges in the production of travel and literary accounts. This is a highly original study that deserves wide readership and discussion.--Carlos Aguirre, University of Oregon
