Description

The American lumberjack at work and at play, from Main to Oregon - here is his rough and lusty story. In these modern days, timber is harvested by cigarette-smoking married men, whose children go to school in busses, but for nearly three hundred years the logger was a real pioneer, who ranged through the forests of many states, steel calks in his boots, an ax in his fist, a plug of cheweing handy, and emerged at intervals into the towns to call on soft ladies and drink hard liquor.

About the Author

Beloved Northwest author Stewart H. Holbrook, a Vermont native and former logger, came to Portland, Oregon, in 1923. His works of popular history covered a variety of topics, including logging, famous figures of the Old West, and interesting events and people of the Pacific Northwest. A columnist for the Oregonian, Holbrook had articles published in newspapers and magazines all over the country, and he published many books.
