About the Author

Nellie, besides being an author, librarian, and newspaper reporter, also lived fully in many other dimensions. She was a wife to Dr. Robert L. Picken, loving mother of Kathy, Jim and Bruce, and grandmother to ten. She was a strong swimmer and first mate sailor with her family on sailboat excursions on lakes Okanogan, Priest, Coeur d'Alene, Lake Chelan and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Nellie spoke several languages and was a world traveler, touring Europe with her daughter, Kathy, and China with one of her best friends, Janet. She cultivated gardens and canned fruits and vegetables for winter. For many years she was main cook for cherry picking crews at a family owned cherry orchard on the shores of Lake Chelan, picking and savoring many a ripe cherry while perched on the rungs of a ladder. She was secretary/bookkeeper for her son Bruce's gun-smith business. Nellie had physical, intellectual, and creative energy, a quick wit, and good sense of humor, which carried her through 91 years. She had many told and untold stories.
