About the Author

Leslie T. Sharpe is the former Vice President of the New York City Audubon Society, an environmentalist, and a lifelong naturalist living on Lazy Hawk Mountain in the Great Western Catskills. She has taught writing and editing at Columbia University, New York University and the City College of New York and her book Editing Fact and Fiction: A Concise Guide to Book Editing is still a staple text for writing students.

"[The authors] have written by far the most complete manual for editors ever published, and they've spiced it with dozens of examples, taken from life, that will delight everyone who has had or is about to have a career in publishing." Richard Marek, President, Marek & Charles, past president and publisher of E.P. Dutton
"This is a worthwhile book; it is comprehensive, practical, up-to-the-minute, and pleasant to read. And yes, it is impeccably edited." Phyllis Aronoff, Ampersand
"...attention to detail is what separates this book from lots of other guides. Sharpe and Gunther explain the editorial process thoroughly yet succinctly, leaving no doubt about what it's like to edit...advice that's refreshing and valuable...suitable for anyone who doesn't know everything about book editing." Copy Editor
"...comes very close to hitting the ideal mark....useful to editors of every stripe." Martin Kohl, The Freelancer
"Anyone considering an editing career will profit from Editing Fact and Fiction. The authors cover their broad subject with efficiency, commendable respect for the work of writers, and an occasional touch of humor. Perhaps their greatest service is to show what it is like to face a manuscript, pencil in hand--the very essence of editing." Mary Lou Burket, Chicago's Children's Reading Round Table
"...Sharpe and Gunther really know their stuff. From the job descriptions of editorial staff members through the minutiae of the actual editing process, they cover this field thoroughly and with astonishing concision...the book would also be useful at reference desks for answering elusive questions of style." Pat Monaghan, Booklist
"...a concise, practical eight-chapter guide for fiction adn nonfiction book editors...differs substantially from the typical technical editing books on the market...replete with interesing, relevant examples and anecdotes that make the book an easy read...an important addition to the published books on editing and is a fine complement to the technical editing texts that are adept at providing novices with the practical proofreading/copyediting skills needed to be conscientious editors." Gener Plunka, Technical Communication
"Editing Fact and Fiction is an ideal book for beginning editors and for people contemplating a career in editing....Sharpe and Gunther have given us a useful account of the process of editing." Rosemary Shipton, Journal of Scholarly Publishing
