Draigon Weather...

The brutal, drought-bringing heat that arises from the colossal, near-mythical Draigon, is a fell portent, heralding the doom of a striving woman.

When Leiel's mother is Sacrificed to the Draigon to relieve the terrible drought, Leiel is marked by the shame brought to her family. She must leave school, relegated to a new life of servitude.

Cleod, the woodcutter's son, is Leiel's closest friend. To avenge Leiel's mother, he vows to rise above his station and join the Ehlewer Enclave, an elite society famed for training men to kill Draigon.

The friends' lives take different paths. Cleod struggles with divided loyalties as he learns he cannot be a Draigon hunter while remaining a friend to a tainted woman. Leiel seeks forbidden knowledge and old secrets, placing herself in danger of sharing her mother's fate.

When Draigon Weather returns to the land, Cleod has the chance to fulfill all his promises--both to Leiel and to his new masters, the Ehlewer. But as the rivers choke on their own silt and heat soaks the ground, the choices the two friends have made begin to catch up with them--for what plagues Arnan is more than just a monster.

About the Author

Raised in Maine, Paige L. Christie became obsessed with books after falling in love with the movie, The Black Stallion. When her mother presented her with a copy of the book the movie was based on, worlds opened up. It had never occurred to Paige that there was more to a story than what a movie showed. Imagine her joy at learning that novels had more to say than movies. What followed was a revelation that stories could not only be read, but written. This led to decades filling notebooks with stories. Two random Degrees later (in English and in Web Technology), the gentle prodding of a friend urged Paige into an experiment that broke loose Paige's writing in completed-novel-form for the first time. (No she was not bitten by a radioactive anything.) Along the road to authorship, Paige had adventures in everything from weatherstick making to cross-country ski racing, white water raft guiding, wedding photography, website design, and the dreaded 'retail'. (Lots and lots and lots of retail.) Her current obsessions include the study of Middle Eastern and North African folk dances, costume design, and dreaming up new ways to torture...err...explore her characters. Paige resides in the mountains of North Carolina where she runs a small art gallery and wine shop. She spends her evenings writing speculative fiction, walking her dog, and being ignored by her herd of 3-legged cats. A believer in the power of words, Paige tries to tell stories that are both entertaining and thoughtful. She enjoys stories with intense impact, and strives in her writing to evoke an emotional response in her readers. Especially of interest are tales that speak to women, and open a space where adventure and fantasy are not all about romance and happy endings.

Reviews

"A tightly focused first installment that delivers a delightful twist on the classic folk tale of appeasement by sacrifice, seen through the eyes of two immersive, engaging characters and rewarding the reader with a gripping promise of more to come."

Janny Wurts, author of the Wars of Light and Shadow series

"Draigon Weather deftly takes those tried and tested tropes-the gallant dragonslayer, the damsel in distress-and turns them on their head. It's a beautifully measured, compelling tale of two young people struggling against the roles society has forced upon them. It's also a moving anthem to the power of stories and the deepest bonds of sisterhood. Christie brings her world to life through earthy, honest storytelling, which is a pleasure to read. I can't wait for Book Two."

Lucy Holland, author of Sistersong

"This is an epic in the real sense of the word, in the same way that the best Westerns focused on a few fully fleshed out characters in a brilliant widescreen landscape, highlighting personal triumphs and tragedies far more than massed battles. Draigon Weather is a thoughtful and clever retooling of the concept of sacrifice."

Steven Poore-Fantasy Faction, author of Heir to the North and The High King's Vengence

"Christie's skillful evocation of a disintegrating landscape and the dysfunctional society grappling with that disaster is worth being patient for, as is Cleod's gritty, desolate perseverance."
