Death Magick Abundance
Akasha Rabut
(Author)
Description
More than any party, parade, team, or disaster, New Orleans is the people. The ones who persevere, survive, strengthen, and transform the city in all its unceasing vibrancy. For nearly a decade, photographer Akasha Rabut has documented this thriving culture. In her first book, she reveals the city's spirit through the pink smoke of the Caramel Curves, the first all-female black motorcycle club; alongside the Southern Riderz, urban cowboys on horseback in the streets; amid the fierce dedication and talent of the Edna Karr High School marching band, majorettes, and dance team; and many others who represent the next generation of New Orleans. Seeking to interpret and preserve a sacred cultural heritage while redefining itself against a constantly shifting landscape, this book is a conduit for the love and unending beauty of New Orleans and its people to flow to the rest of the world.Product Details

Reviews
For 10 years, Akasha Rabut has been documenting New Orleans and the social tribes who bring it to life. Now, the stories are published in her first photobook, Death Magick Abundance, a collection of dynamic images that capture the sound and style of New Orleans. - British Journal of Photography, March 2020
Through her collaborations with the many people who make New Orleans unique, Rabut has created a moving tribute to the city, which has also left its mark on her. - Washington Post, April 2020
To look at Akasha Rabut's first monograph, you'd be forgiven for expecting something other than a photobook inside, but its pink-fronted, star-marked cover is only half as curious as its name. Death Magick Abundance, published by Anthology Editions, refers to the photographer's own understanding of New Orleans' cycles of life: things die in order to bring others to life. Designed by local artist and tattooist, Pauly Lingerfelt, the cover itself suggests something of Haitian spell magic. -Wallpaper Mag, March 2020
