About the Author

Valerie Limmer lives in Japan, where she works as a missionary, sharing the good news of Jesus' love, hope, and salvation. She is neither a therapist nor a theologian, but she has experienced severe abuse from a handful of people. In Captive Set Free, her second book, she shares many of the principles and techniques she's learned and applied to her own life on her journeys towards forgiveness.

Forty years of pastoral ministry have clarified for me that forgiveness may be the greatest gift that we can receive or give. Valerie describes this precious gift in a biblically sound manner...well worth a read and the chapter reflections merit personal study.

-Dr. Rodger McCready, Retired Pastor

Limmer takes a fresh and thorough look at a familiar topic. She is grounded biblically, unflinchingly honest and well researched (from Doidge to Dostoyevsky). With her inclusion of several somatic exercises, this is a powerful and beautiful work. If there is another book as transformational as this one I have never come across it.

-Cathy Sakiyama, Therapist (PACCP), Certified Professional Counsellor

It's safe to say that the need for a deeper understanding of forgiveness is something we all need, and Valerie Limmer tackles the topic in a way that sets the reader at ease, while discussing a richly expressed understanding of forgiveness that is both personal and thoroughly biblical. Valerie writes like the trusted friend you approach over coffee when your heart is heavy, and who encourages with an open Bible and an equally open and vulnerable heart.

-John Steadman, Director of External Relations, McMaster Divinity College

I have already shared some of the insights in Captive Set Free with colleagues and family as I seek to apply these principles to my life. The case studies and stories from Valerie's own life help to underscore the message that God is not asking the impossible when he calls us to forgive.

-Treflyn Lloyd-Roberts, CEO, Yeldall Manor Drug & Alcohol Recovery Centre

Valerie's book moved me to tears. It's so personal and yet also universal. Her understanding of trauma and its impact is a welcome addition to the literature in this area. It's a beautiful book that I will reread to remind myself that forgiveness in love is the only way to peace.

-Sarah Bedley, Children's Counselor, The Yellow Brick House Shelter for Abused Women and Children

Developed through the crucible of Valerie's own experiences, Captive Set Free has deeply touched me! It is needed in our world today, a 'must-have' for every Christian's home library.

-Faith Crosby, Christian Women's Inspirational Speaker

Captive Set Free provides a scripture-infused journey that invites readers to unpack the meaning and application of forgiveness. Interspersed with personal accounts of hurt and healing, and filled with practical examples of how to nurture God-honouring relationships, Captive Set Free is a must-read for anyone working alongside God's plan for a reconciled world and reconciled relationships through Christ.
