About the Author

Toni Morrison (1931-2019) was Robert F. Goheen Professor Emerita at the Center for Creative and Performing Arts at Princeton University and author of Sula, Song of Solomon, Beloved, Paradise, The Bluest Eye, and other novels. She received the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Reviews

"It's a slim volume, one that can be read in an afternoon, but don't let this fool you into thinking it lacks power. Morrison's--and the book's--central thesis is true, if not necessarily original: 'A writer's life and work are not a gift to mankind; they are its necessity.'" -- Los Angeles Times
