About the Author

Rick Peyser served as Director of Social Advocacy and Coffee Community Outreach for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, where he worked for 27 years. He is a past president of the Specialty Coffee Association of America. He served as a member of the Fair Trade Labeling Organizations International (FLO) Board of Directors for 6 years, and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Food4Farmers (a non-profit organization he co-founded), Root Capital, The Coffee Trust, and Project Alianza. Rick co-authored Brewing Change: Behind the Bean at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (2012), was instrumental in producing the video After the Harvest, and in convening The Coalition for Coffee Communities - comprised of coffee companies working pre-competitively to improve the quality of life for coffee farming families. When not traveling, Rick can be found running marathons, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or playing in R&B bands.
Bill Mares has been a reporter-photographer, state legislator, and high school teacher. Raised in Texas and educated at Harvard, he has authored or co-authored 17 books, including, with Ross Conrad and others, a history of beekeeping in Vermont, The Land of Milk and Honey (Green Place Books, 2020). He lives in Burlington with his wife of 48 years, Chris Hadsel. They have two sons.
