Reviews
"When I began talking and teaching about breathing, the first person I invited to that work was Jill Miller. There are very few people who have a black belt of understanding in the biological experience; she sits in a class of her own. Jill's understanding of the role of breathing in being human and its applications cannot be replicated. She already has changed the landscape of the oldest movement practice we know (yoga) and is now making sense of its foundation. If you are interested in truly understanding how our breath works with us or without us, this is the most important book to date on the subject."
--Brian Mackenzie, human performance specialist and author of Unplugged and Power Speed Endurance "It is a wry comment on our current condition that we need to be taught how to walk, run, stand, and even breathe. Nevertheless, the research shows the cost of not teaching humans these simple but lost arts is disease and disengagement. Jill Miller has distilled her years of practical work in the field into a reference manual for the modern therapist, parent, or human that respects our intelligence and covers the field with assurance and, best of all, effervescent humor and disarming honesty."
--Tom Myers, author of Anatomy Trains "Body by Breath is an extraordinary read. A gifted teacher, Jill Miller masterfully weaves together important physiological concepts with clear diagnostics and resulting actionable protocols. The illustrations, graphics, and writing style combine to seamlessly float the reader back and forth between wonder, inspiration, and self-guided application. Body by Breath is as comprehensive as any academic course or textbook--yet also dedicates hundreds of pages to walking the reader through a guide to building a personalized protocol."
--Andy Galpin, professor of Human Performance, director of the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton, and bestselling author of Unplugged "In Body by Breath, Jill has given us the user's manual for the human body that we have all been waiting for. Many of us are seeking guidance to help us restore a sense of balance as we navigate the mental, emotional, and physiological impact of the pandemic. Jill explains the science of breath while making a complex topic both understandable and usable in our everyday lives. Throughout the book, you will receive experiential practices that invite you to embody the material and enhance your well-being. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Bravo!"
--Dr. Arielle Schwartz, clinical psychologist and author of The Post-Traumatic Growth Guidebook "Body by Breath is a blueprint for working through the physical and emotional storms caused by trauma or injury. It's like Jill gives you a giant warm hug of facts about navigating your body and mind, and then she holds your hand to guide you step by step through practices to build physical and emotional intelligence. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't benefit from this book."
--Dr. Theresa Larson, PT, DPT, CSCS, Marine Corps veteran, and author of Warrior "At a time when the culture demands us to take in more and more, the pandemic made us afraid to inhale, and respiratory illness--from asthma to apnea to COPD--are everywhere, Body by Breath arrives like of breath of fresh air to give us the inspiration we need to find more freedom, comfort, and vitality in the most basic of physical acts, which is the first thing we do when we come into this world--breathe!"
--David Lesondak, BCSI, ATSI, FST, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and author of Fascia: What It Is and Why It Matters "Body by Breath is a complete manual to positively inspire you. Jill Miller's thorough and thoughtful book is packed with clear explanations, exercises and gorgeous, helpful visuals. Body by Breath is the 'how to breathe well' textbook you wish you'd read years ago."
--Katy Bowman, MS, bestselling author of Move Your DNA and Rethink Your Position
Body by Breath is an essential resource for all bodies, including athletes; educators; yoga practitioners; those who struggle with pain, injury, anxiety, or the effects of long-term COVID; or anyone who wants to cultivate greater skills for self-regulation and healing. With an eye toward science, Jill Miller provides theoretical explanations and embodied exercises to help us understand and experience the impact that deep, deliberate, and targeted breath has on our physical, emotional, and psychological health and wellness. As a yoga teacher and practitioner, I will use this thorough and well-researched book to not only enrich my understanding but as a resource within my own programming.
