Reviews
"Researching individual leaders of the U.S. Civil War has never been easy due to the large Variety of possible sources. This biographical dictionary goes a long way toward solving this problem. ... Even though it is a reference work, this book is a delight to peruse. The entries are uneven and vary in their approach due to the use of dozens of authors, but this adds to the work's charm. the entries are loaded with fascinating information and serve to point out how the nation was consumed by the war. ...This book is especially recommended for all larger academic and public libraries with special Civil War enthusiasts."-ARBA
..."Highly recommended and engrossing reading."-Bravo/Veterans Outlook
"This compilation is quite well executed and will please Civil War buffs..."-Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

"What has been needed is this authoritative and valuable reference work by contemporary experts, which can put individuals quickly in their correct perspective and lead to further modern readings, if necessary. The impressive list of contributors reads like a veritable who's who of present-day Civil War scholars, with essays by Edwin C. Bearss, Norman A. Graebner, William Hanchett, E.B. Long, Benjamin Quarles, and John Y. Simon, to name a few."-Choice
..."a well written and edited source of information on 872 individuals who had an impact on the country during the years 1861-1865. ...What makes this volume unique, and useful, is the biographies of federal congressmen and senators. This reviewer has never seen such a comprehensive list of these individuals. ...for those readers seeking an excellent source of information for the Northern political leaders of the Civil War...this is your volume."-The Civil War News
