Set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who is mistakenly sent to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way through life with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town. The book has been adapted as films, television films, and animated and live-action television series.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian author and writer of 20 novels, 30 essays, 500 poems and 530 short stories. She is best known for the Anne of Green Gables series of children's books. Most of her fictional works are set in Canada's smallest province, Prince Edward Island. In 1935, Montgomery was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire.
