Description

This treasured coming-of-age story chronicles the journey of a little red-headed orphan, Anne Shirley, as she struggles to settle into her new life on Prince Edward Island.

Hot-headed, strong-willed, and armed with a loose tongue, Anne Shirley is just eleven years old when she's mistakenly sent to the Cuthbert's farm at Green Gables. The ageing siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, couldn't be more shocked when the fiery-headed Anne turns up in place of the boy they requested. Deciding to give the orphan a chance, they agree to let her stay so long as she helps with the farmwork.

Anne soon finds herself running into trouble. She takes the peaceful Avonlea community by storm, disturbing the steady rhythm of the villagers' life. Stubborn and keen to make a name for herself, Anne begins to make lifelong friends (and enemies) in this much-loved coming-of-age classic.

First published in 1908, L. M. Montgomery brings the quick-witted and vividly imaginative Anne to life in this classic children's novel. Incorporating themes of friendship, nature, morality and ambition, Anne of Green Gables has been loved for generations.

Reviews

""It is only necessary to read a few pages of the book to be assured that Anne of Green Gables is in conception and style, the fruit (the first fruit, we believe) of a richly endowed mind of rare imaginative capacity. Her scenes and the personages with which she peoples them become real as one reads."" - The Gazette, 1908

""Anne of Green Gables is the dearest, most moving and delightful child since the immortal Alice."" - Mark Twain, 1908

""It is a gem even, with her red hair and freckles. We should dearly have loved Anne Shirley in the flesh."" - Temple Scott, 1908
